Shoulder arthritis - how stiff is the shoulder?

Loss of the range of motion of the shoulder is one of the commonest symptoms of shoulder arthritis. Although we are most interested in the motion between the humerus and the scapula, it is easiest to measure the motion between the humerus and the thorax as shown in these figures copyrighted by Steve Lippitt.


Forward elevation

External rotation

Internal rotation up the back

Internal rotation in abduction

External rotation in abduction
