Pyrocarbon?

 A 62 year old active farmer had a painful, stiff right shoulder and these x-rays.




Would a pyrocarbon implant give him a better outcome than a conventional shoulder arthroplasty?

He elected a standard ream and run arthroplasty and returned to working his farm.


Eleven years after surgery, he came by for a followup. At the age of 73, he was still actively farming. He had a perfect Simple Shoulder Test Score (12/12), full comfortable motion, and these x-rays showing a stable humeral component and a stable glenoid joint surface.



Five years ago he had a left ream and run with the same functional and radiographic result result.




 The question is whether patients such as this would do better with a pyrocarbon implant.
