Yesterday, I was introduced to the concept of Iikigai
(生き甲斐) is a Japanese word meaning roughly:
“the reason you get up in the morning.”
It’s the idea of a personally meaningful, sustainable source of purpose based on four domains:
| Domain | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| What you love | joy, interests, intrinsic pull |
| What you’re good at | strengths, capabilities |
| What the world needs | contribution, service |
| What you can be paid for | value that is economically supported |
The concept can be seen as a Venn diagram with four overlapping circles. Our ikigai sits at the center where all four circles overlap:
It would seem that - as orthopaedic surgeons - we have a great opportunity to realize Ikigai and the serenity and longevity that comes with it.Wishing that you have a long, happy life and enjoy getting up and at it each morning.
Getting up in the morning.
