Practice Patterns for Subacromial Decompression and Rotator Cuff Repair: An Analysis of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery Database JBJS

Practice Patterns for Subacromial Decompression and Rotator Cuff Repair: An Analysis of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery Database JBJS

The authors of this article reviewed the practice patterns reflected in the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery Part II database from 2004 to 2009 and found a significant trend toward arthroscopic rotator cuff repair by young orthopaedic surgeons with sports medicine fellowship training. An increasing percent of these repairs were performed without subacromial decompression, and, overall, there was a decrease in the frequency of isolated arthroscopic subacromial decompression over this time interval.

These latter findings hopefully reflect progressive recognition of the points we made in a previous post and in our article Published Evidence Relevant to the Diagnosis of Impingement Syndrome of the Shoulder. Hopefully the rates of the SAD (subacromial decompression) procedure have continued to drop since 2009.
