Anatomy of the glenoid on axillary x-rays - avoiding the cost and radiation exposure of CT unless necessary.

Some believe that it is necessary to get a CT scan or MRI before shoulder joint replacement. We have found that a carefully done axillary view plain film can give all the needed information without the cost of an MRI or CT and the radiation exposure of a CT scan.

Here are four views showing different findings.

Normal anteroposterior relationship of the humeral head and normal glenoid version.

Posterior displacement of the humeral head on the glenoid, but normal glenoid version.

Posterior displacement of the humeral head and glenoid retroversion.

Posterior displacement of the humeral head and biconcave glenoid.
