Failures and complications of reverse total shoulder

Reverse total shoulder is rapidly becoming the most common type of shoulder joint replacement. In the midst of this enthusiasm, it is important to be mindful that reverse total shoulders have particular types of failure.

Here are three that were referred to us this month:

(1) Dislocation resulting from separation of the polyethylene spacer from the humeral cup

(2) Failure of glenoid baseplate with loosening of humeral component

     (3) Dislocation and scapular notching.

It is of interest that these failures were in reverse total shoulders made by three different companies. Again it is worth observing that these three types of complications are unique to the reverse total shoulder.  As a result, we are careful to consider other treatment options before going to the reverse total shoulder.
