Aaron Rogers shoulder injury, what might it be?

As all football fans know, a great quarterback, Aaron Rogers of the Green Bay Packers sustained a shoulder injury on Monday Night Football. The video of the injury can be seen here.

While we have no 'insider' information on the nature of this injury, we note that he landed directly on the lateral aspect of his left (non-throwing) shoulder with the tackler on top of him. We call this a lateral impaction or 'pile driver' injury. In such injuries, a large compressive force is applied to the shoulder which is transmitted by the acromion to the clavicle and from the clavicle to the sternum. Thus the structures at risk for injury include the acromion, the AC (acromio-clavicular) joint, the clavicle, or the SC (sternoclavicular) joint.

Here is a diagram showing these structures

A severe form of lateral impaction injury may include a fracture of the neck of the scapula and fractures of the ribs.

These injuries can usually be diagnoses by a physical examination and high quality x-rays. The treatment will depend on the nature of the injury.

We hope Mr Rogers has a relatively benign injury and is back on the field soon.

Ben Roethlisberger injury update: Steelers QB leaves after hit to shoulder. AOL

Ben Roethlisberger injury update: Steelers QB leaves after hit to shoulder. AOL

We are all saddened by injury. Football has surely seen more than its share this last few weeks.
Last night the Steelers quarterback was sacked, landing on his right (throwing) arm and had to leave the game. We have no knowledge of his diagnosis, but a study of the video clip provided by AOL does reveal a bit about the mechanism of injury. Apparently he first landed on his elbow

and then on his shoulder

While we could speculate on the injuries that might result from such a mechanism, it is not appropriate to do so. We eagerly await the diagnosis of the team physicians and hope to see this great quarterback on the field again soon.

Novak Djokovic, Новак Ђоковић, pulls out of Paris Masters Tennis Tournament - what is his shoulder injury?

The exact cause of his shoulder problem is not known, but it is not surprising that top level tennis players who serve the ball around 130 miles per hour sustain shoulder injuries. Such speeds subject the rotator cuff and the stabilizing structures of the shoulder, such as the glenoid labrum, to major loads. Once these structures are injured, a complete return to the previous level of function may be difficult. Here is an interesting biomechanical analysis of the form of some of the top men players.
