Small supraspinatus tears repaired by arthroscopy: are clinical results influenced by the integrity of the cuff after two years? Functional and anatomic results of forty-six consecutive cases. JSES

Rotator cuff surgery

JSES published  "Small supraspinatus tears repaired by arthroscopy: are clinical results influenced by the integrity of the cuff after two years? Functional and anatomic results of forty-six consecutive cases."

Keeping in mind that this report concerned small supraspinatus-only tears, it is of interest that 15% had partial thickness retear and 13% had a full thickness retear.

Readers of this blog will recall previous posts and previous posts in which the post-surgical anatomical integrity of the cuff did not correlate with the quality of the result perceived by the patient.  Thus we are not surprised with the authors' statement that there was no association between the functional and anatomic results by ultrasound.

It seems that cuff integrity may not be the principal determinant of the functional result from rotator cuff surgery.
