Does the Arthrex Eclipse stemless humeral component improve the outcomes of total shoulder arthroplasty?

Clinical and radiologic outcomes following total shoulder arthroplasty using Arthrex Eclipse stemless humeral component with minimum 2 years’ follow-up

These authors report a study of consecutive Eclipse stemless prostheses for osteoarthritis with a minimum 2-year follow-up (range, 2-6 years).

They included only total shoulder arthroplasties performed for osteoarthritis. There were 5 reoperations—1 for impingement of the biceps stump and 4 revisions to reverse arthroplasty for cuff failure.

Preoperative and two-year postoperative Oxford Shoulder Scores (OSS) were only available on 49 of the 100 patients. On average the OSS improved from 18 to 37 out of a maximum score of 48, or 63% of the maximal possible improvement. This %MPI is less than that reported (>75%) in a recent international multi center study of 1207 patients receiving conventional prostheses (see this link).

Comment: Thus as pointed out in this link, one must ask whether the incremental costs of R&D, marketing and learning curve for this prosthesis are offset by increased benefit to the patients receiving it.
